STS Network Grows Stronger

Eight Schools Embrace Safe Transport Solutions, Three More to Follow

School Transport Services (STS), the leading provider of safe and efficient school transport, was excited to begin operations across eight new schools for the academic year 2022-23. These esteemed institutions included Hamilton International School Qatar (HID), Jebel Ali School (JAS), and Dubai National Schools (DNS). These partnerships marked a significant milestone for STS as we continue to fulfill our commitment to delivering excellence in service quality to the education community.

To celebrate the beginning of this exciting journey, we had our beloved Super Driver and Super Guardian mascots visit the newly affiliated schools. During orientation days, parents and students had the pleasure of meeting these delightful characters, who engaged everyone in safety-themed games and distributed goodie bags. The visit provided a fantastic opportunity for parents and students to get to know about the state-of-the-art safety technologies on our smart bus fleet.

Looking ahead, STS has even more reasons to be thrilled as we eagerly await the next academic year of 2023-24. The STS family is set to welcome three additional schools: Arcadia Global School (AGS), St. Mary’s Catholic High School Muhaisnah (SMM), and GEMS Metropole School Al Waha (MTW). These new partnerships highlight the continued growth and recognition of STS as the preferred school transportation provider in the region.

As we expand our network, we remain committed to upholding our core values of Safe, Timely, Smart. By establishing strong partnerships with educational institutions, we strive to enhance the overall school experience for parents and students, through safe and reliable bus journeys.

Mind Matters: STS Group’s Commitment to Employee Mental Wellness

In a world where the pressures of modern life can often take a toll on mental well-being, STS Group has been focused on building a company culture that supports the mental health of our employees. Recognising that a thriving workforce is not just about productivity, but also about the holistic well-being of the staff, STS Group has been resolute in our commitment to addressing the mental health needs of our employees. Over the years, we have taken bold strides to foster a culture of openness, support, and understanding through awareness workshops and our Care to Share support programme.

In September 2022, the QHSE team organised a transformative two-day workshop on mental health and wellness for our bus drivers. Dr. Arfa Khan, a seasoned Clinical Psychologist from the Aster Jubilee Medical Complex, engaged with over 3,000 drivers sparking insightful conversations about the significance of creating a supportive and comfortable atmosphere within the workplace. She helped them identify mental illnesses and equipped them with the tools to recognise stress triggers, facilitating a deeper understanding of the challenges that can affect mental well-being.

One of the highlights of this impactful workshop was the practical demonstration of coping techniques designed to manage workplace stress. Breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness practices were discussed. These healthy practices will serve as invaluable tools that the drivers would be able to integrate into their daily routines. Understanding these hands-on strategies instilled a sense of empowerment in the workforce.

The ripple effect of this workshop will positively impact job satisfaction levels, enhance productivity, and create a culture of compassion within the oraginisation. The efforts made toward the betterment of employee mental health have undoubtedly set a commendable precedent for other organisations in the region to follow suit.

Powering Security Solutions for GEMS Schools

A closer look at the two most impactful projects by Securi Tech Services from the year.

Securi Tech Services (STS), a SIRA-licensed System Integration entity under the STS Group, has played a pivotal role in enhancing security measures in schools under GEMS Education, with two highly impactful projects during the year.

GEMS Metropole School, Al Waha (MTW)

In collaboration with GEMS Education, STS successfully executed the installation of a comprehensive CCTV system and access control system for the newly established MTW school. This cutting-edge security solution includes state-of-the-art cameras, a robust video management system, and efficient access control. With the dedication of all stakeholders, the implementation was completed seamlessly, and in time for the school to commence its operations for the September 2023 academic term.

GEMS Founders School, Al Mizhar (GFM) – Phase II

In the case of the GFM Phase II project, STS was entrusted with the task of implementing CCTV and access control systems. The team accomplished an impressive feat by skillfully integrating the new security infrastructure with the existing video management solutions at the main building. The team’s expertise ensured the new facility was fully operational for the commencement of the new term in September 2023.

Through these remarkable projects, STS has significantly contributed to strengthening the safety and security at schools in the GEMS Education network. Our commitment to technical expertise and safety excellence has been instrumental in enabling these educational institutions to provide a safe and secure learning environment for their students and staff.

STS Group and ITC Abu Dhabi Come Together to Empower Students as Road Safety Champions

STS Group has always prioritised student safety and as a responsible transport operator, they actively conduct interactive learning programmes for students, delivering lessons in road safety.

The Road Safety Awareness Campaign was launched on 8 February 2023 in Horizon Private School, Abu Dhabi, and was attended by senior members of the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), Road Safety UAE, and STS Group. The purpose of the campaign is to empower the student community to become advocates of road and transport safety through a unique learning environment with a curated road safety curriculum, interactive videos, and games.

During the campaign workshops, students are assigned appropriate learning levels (Primary/Intermediate/Senior) based on their grades. They undertake lessons in road safety management and participate in engagement activities with interactive games and quizzes that teach them to treat road safety as an ongoing responsibility.

The learning programme covers topics like travel safety protocol in the school bus and on the road and emergency protocol. One of the learning modules is based on local laws related to the use of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) like bicycles and e-Bikes. The campaign includes interactive board games designed to teach students about road safety practices and danger zones surrounding the school bus. Winners of the games receive goodie bags and one lucky student was awarded a bicycle, while another took home an e-Bike.

Sumaya Saeed Al Neyadi, Section Head of Road Safety in ITC Abu Dhabi explains: “ITC is committed to improving road safety in line with the vision of the authorities of Abu Dhabi and of UAE Federal level, and this School Road Safety Campaign is of particular interest to ITC and the society of the UAE. As a mother of three, I can relate to the desire of all parents to make sure that our children are safe on the roads. Road safety education must start at home and at school and hence, we are delighted to collaborate with STS Group on this exciting and important campaign.”

Steve Burnell, STS Group Managing Director, said “The campaign aims to reach over 65,000 students across 20 schools over the span of six months, with the purpose of embedding traffic safety principles, proper conduct on roads, and the values of safe driving in children from an early age. By doing so constructively and systematically, we will contribute to reducing road traffic accidents and help raise a generation of safer drivers for the future.”

The campaign has been a resounding success since its launch in February and has covered eight schools across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Dubai. The initiative aligns perfectly with STS Group’s holistic approach towards shaping a safety-centric culture within the community and reflects our core values of Safe, Timely, Smart.

Stuff The Bus with Hope: Connecting Hearts Across Borders A Year-Round CSR Campaign

This year, during Ramadan, we were excited to launch our all-year-round CSR campaign, Stuff The Bus with Hope. We teamed up with Bring Hope Humanitarian Foundation (BHHF) to spread hope and joy to marginalised communities in Kurdistan and Africa by encouraging school children in the UAE to donate school items, educational supplies, toys, and goodies, while also finding a way to connect with the recipients in a meaningful way.

Launching the Ramadan campaign in March 2023, STS Group has been working with 87 schools in the UAE, that we operate in, to collect donations for displaced families. In addition to donating items, students were encouraged to record video messages and write heartfelt letters to families in Kurdistan and Africa, creating a tangible connection between the donor and receiver. Over 1,200 items were collected on the very first day of Ramadan.

“At STS Group, we believe in giving back to the community and helping those in need. We are thrilled to partner with BHHF to expand our Stuff The Bus campaign and create a more meaningful experience of giving back this Ramadan season. Through this campaign, we hope to encourage the children here in the UAE to consider what life might be like for the person they’re writing to, and this can be great for building empathy and becoming a well-rounded, global citizen,” said Steve Burnell, Managing Director of STS Group.

The campaign was launched at the beginning of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection in the region. It will continue throughout the year as an ongoing effort. At the beginning of the campaign, students were given the opportunity to volunteer in packing care packages. Parents and students were encouraged to donate items under the following categories: toys, educational books, stationary, clothes (for adults and children), school equipment (backpacks, paper, notebooks, etc.), along with one item of sentimental value to the donor and a letter explaining the item’s significance to them.

In June 2023, at the end of the academic term, we brought together 20 students to collaborate in sorting and packing donated items. This activity took place at the BHHF warehouse located in Dubai Industrial City.

“We are delighted to partner with STS Group on this initiative, which aligns with our mission of bringing hope and aid to those in need. We believe the letters carrying personal messages from students will make a substantial impact on the recipients and help build a lasting connection across the borders,” said Dr. Mariwan Baker, Founder and Chairman of BHHF.

STS Group is committed to creating a positive impact through its CSR campaigns. Stuff The Bus with Hope is a testament to our dedication to social responsibility and making a difference in the lives of others.

Ghaf Tree Planting Initiative

Marking International Mother Earth Day 2017, a team of 40 STS volunteers took part in our annual tree planting programme planting seeds for around 250 new trees.

At STS, we take our environmental responsibility very seriously. We aim to adopt sustainable practices wherever possible and seek to reduce the environmental impact of our operations wherever we can. So on 22 April, bus drivers, conductors, operations staff and management came together and gave up their own time to make a difference to the UAE ecosystem. As part of the Give a Ghaf programme, the STS volunteers planted seeds for around 250 Ghaf trees.

The Ghaf is the national tree of the UAE and planting it not only ensures the survival of this national treasure for generations to come, but it also provides a valuable impact for the UAE environment and beyond by:

  • absorbing CO2 and generating fresh oxygen
  • providing habitat and food for native wildlife
  • offering valuable shade in the desert heat
  • giving ground resistance to prevent against erosion

The United Nations International Mother Earth Day aims to remind us citizens of this planet, that we are entirely reliant on the Earth for our existence and sustenance and, as such, we share a collective responsibility to protect the Earth’s resources and ecosystems.

New Seatbelt Laws

New UAE Seatbelt Laws Announced

Laws carrying heavy penalties are passed making it compulsory for drivers to ensure that passengers buckle up in their car.

As part of a raft of new road and traffic rules, the UAE Ministry of Interior has announced a big leap forward in road safety for car passengers.

The laws state:

  • everyone travelling in the car MUST wear a seatbelt, regardless of their age and whether they are travelling in the front or the back of the car
  • children under 10 years of age are prohibited from sitting in the front seat
  • age-appropriate car seats must be used for children under 10

The responsibility for ensuring that all passengers are properly restrained lies with the driver, who risks penalties of a fine of Dhs.400 and 4 black licence points for failing to observe the law.

The new laws are due to come into effect on 1st July 2017.

The move has been hailed by Dubai Police and road safety campaigners, including STS’s child road safety partner, Road Safety UAE.

Stop sign on a dubai school bus

STOP means stop

New laws carrying hefty fines and penalties are introduced to safeguard the areas around school buses.

Getting on and off the school bus have the potential to be risky situations for children who may be distracted by seeing their friends or family, too young to properly comprehend safe road behaviour or too small to be easily seen by drivers of nearby cars.

As such we all have a role to play in reducing the risks for our children and making their journey to school safer. Our bus drivers and conductors teach the children every day how to get on and off school buses safely, and we ask parents and schools to reiterate the importance of safe behaviour while waiting for and disembarking from buses.

Other road users have their role to play too, and the newly announced laws are a big step towards safety around school buses. The law specifies that:

  • Drivers of all other vehicles must stop at a minimum distance of five metres when the side stand arms of these buses are open.
  • Failure to do so can result in a Dhs.1,000 fine and 10 black points on your licence

Be aware of school buses, keep your distance, keep our children safe.

Meet our monitor

Ever wondered what happens on the school bus once it picks up your little one and pulls away? We talked to Gina Ababan, bus monitor on the Safa British School – Jumeira route, to find out!

How does your day start?

My day starts at 4.30am because at 5.30am I have to do the bus checks before we leave to pick up the children. Every morning I check the seatbelts and emergency exits, and make sure the bus is clean and tidy.

What’s the most important part of your job?

To make the children safe. Make sure they have seatbelts on. But it’s also my job to make them feel happy and comfortable inside the bus.

You have children of all ages under your care. How do you make sure they are all well looked after?

My youngest passengers are in FS1. They are 4 years old. They have special seats because they are smaller. They need extra care because they are so small, so I check on them more often and make sure they are happy and safe.

The children like to talk and tell stories, so I sit and listen to them. They like to sing, so sometimes we will sing together – children’s songs like “Doe a Deer” and “Wheels on the Bus”.

With the older children, I talk to them and get to know them. Then when I need them to listen to me, they do because they respect me. It takes some time but it’s important.

Are the children always well behaved?

Sometimes when they are new, they don’t know the rules but soon they are all behaving and sitting nicely.

And the parents?

The parents are very nice. They are worried about their children’s safety. It’s the most important thing to them of course. But they are always nice. And they are always on time!

What do you do once the children are in school?

After the children are at school, I go to the STS office to do the other part of my job. I make all of the cards for the children’s birthdays. Every month I make more than 400 birthday cards and send them out so they can be given to the child on the bus on their birthday. In the holidays, I help out in the office and at STS roadshow events – like Road Safety events and fairs at schools.

What makes you a good bus monitor?

I’m always smiling. I like making people feel comfortable.

How does your day end?

When the last child has been dropped off, I check the bus to make sure no children are still on board. This is very important. Then I check that the bus is clean and tidy and ready for tomorrow.

What makes a good day for you?

If the kids are happy and all behaving I can see that they are just talking with each other or telling stories with each other, then it’s a good day. I’m very happy.

Parent Meet & Greet

Orientation Day is always a busy day. We called in on The Millennium School – Al Qusais to find out what it entails and why it makes a difference to parents.

Handing over your child into someone else’s care is a big deal. When that person is going to be responsible for your child’s safe travel on the UAE’s busy roads, parents can understandably feel like they are taking a big leap of faith.

Never underestimating the weight of this responsibility, STS takes a personalised approach to reassure parents. At the Orientation Day at The Millennium School – Al Qusais, on 26 March 2017, 55 of STS’ drivers and 55 bus monitors were there to meet and greet parents signing up for school bus transport for the coming term. Each driver and their assigned monitor were responsible for answering parents’ queries, giving parents a chance to meet the people who will be caring for their child each day.

Bus drivers and monitors are the life-blood of STS. They are at the frontline of children’s safety each day, but also go the extra mile to make sure that the children are happy and comfortable as well. For parents, meeting the people who will take charge of their children each day, seeing their professionalism, friendliness and genuine concern offers huge reassurance and comfort. So when it comes to waving their little one goodbye in the morning, parents can get on with their day without anxiety and simply look forward to welcoming them back at home time.

‘The Extended Classroom’

‘The Extended Classroom’ – Children Road Safety Partnership between STS and RoadSafetyUAE

• Road traffic accidents #1 cause of death for children below 14
• Education sector’s vital need to teach road safety
• School buses are ‘The Extended Classroom’ for real-life learning

Dubai, 1st March 2017: STS, the UAE’s biggest private school bus operator enters a strategic partnership with RoadSafetyUAE. According to official data, road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children below the age of 14 years in the UAE. Currently, there is no mandatory road safety content in UAE’s school curricula. Young drivers account for a big share of traffic accidents (for example in Abu Dhabi 63% of all accidents).

Colonel Augustine, Managing Director of STS states: “All parts of the education sector are challenged to educate and to protect our children, and we at STS are aware of our responsibility. We must make sure, that children know all the basics of road safety in order to protect themselves and to share their knowledge with their friends, siblings and families. Educated children will become responsible young drivers once they will get behind the wheel. STS as the biggest private school bus operator in the UAE with more than 2,000 buses, transporting about 70,000+ students every day can play a strategic role in educating school children in a real-life environment.”

The partnership between STS and RoadSafetyUAE will consist of various engagement initiatives aimed at children and parents at events, campaigns and on-line activities, like an on-line pledge for children and parents to always wear their seat belt. In addition, there will be a strong content collaboration between the parties for the recently launched STS magazine “Our Journey“.

Thomas Edelmann, Managing Director of RoadSafetyUAE: “Collaborating with STS means, that we have the chance to expose kids to road safety while they are in and around school buses, hence we speak about the ‘extended classroom’. STS drivers and school bus attendants are experts in road safety and they can engage with kids on a daily basis about proper and safe behavior. STS offers leading safety technology in its fleet and has a great safety track record, so they are a perfect partner for us.”

Children must learn how to safely wait for and enter the school bus. They must learn the importance of buckling up themselves or be buckled up in the school bus. Children must be made aware of the proper behavior while being driven in school buses and how to safely disembark and approach their waiting parents or guardians, and how to safely cross roads on their way home after their school bus ride. We must make it clear to our children, that school bus drivers and attendants are persons of authority and that their directions must be obeyed, in the same manner as the guidance of regular teachers is obeyed. Besides school bus staff, the teacher body as well as the parents must make it crystal clear to students, that they must behave properly in school buses and that they must follow the rules given to them by schools, school bus operators and school bus personnel.

The partnership aims to go beyond the expected, by providing students the opportunity for ‘good citizen’ contributions, for academic projects with regards to sustainability and emission reductions and for arts and crafts competitions.

STS becomes the patron of the topic ‘Safety around schools and school buses’ on RoadSafetyUAE’s on-line portal www.roadsafetyuae.com.

Inspecting the Fleet

The Fleet Inspector is key member of the STS team and a pivotal role in our safety provision. So what does a fleet inspector do?

Before our buses take to the road each day, a host of safety checks are underway: drivers and conductors work through their manual checklist which includes emergency exit and seatbelt checks, our vehicle maintenance software ticks away alerting us to servicing and preventative maintenance needs, and the control room alerts drivers to road and driving conditions.

On top of this, our fleet inspectors do the rounds. Fleet inspectors are an essential part of our ‘belt-and-braces’ approach to safe operations. They carry out regular engine, bodywork and internal checks to ensure that each bus in the fleet is correctly maintained and that everything is in line with RTA specifications.

Sethumadhavan K has been with STS for a staggering 28 years and, after working his way through the ranks from driver to driving foreman, he has spent the last 8 years as a fleet inspector. He is also the proud dad to his 3rd Grade daughter and 10th Grade son who are at school in the UAE.

“There are 31 schools [in my jurisdiction] and to me each one is as important as the next. The quality of the service and the safety of the children has to be identical for each school.

“STS has invested in technological advancements like CCTV and GPS. Everything we do is built around the safety and happiness of the children.

“I enjoy my work enormously. Apart from a short six-month period, I have never worked for any other company apart from STS. And I don’t want to work for any other company. I feel blessed.”

Safety

Safety is the first word in everything we do…

We take extensive steps to ensure the security of the children on our buses. We constantly review our safety policies and use industry best practices. We stringently adhere to all of the RTA’s recommendations and specifications, and draw on our years of experience of transporting children in the UAE to ensure the safety of each child, every day.

Some of our safety practices include:

  • Stringent recruitment procedures and thorough background checks
  • Continuous Professional Development. Every driver goes through pre-service training of 30 hours, bi-annual in-service training and regular CPD programmes.
  • Driver performance monitoring. The Training Team monitors driver conduct to assess their skills and attitudes.
  • GPS vehicle monitoring. The Control Room at STS tracks the movement of all vehicles and the driving pattern of all drivers around the clock.
  • Deployment of buses with specifications prescribed by Dubai’s RTA
  • ID Scanners on board all buses to track attendance and ensure each child travels on the correct route
  • Expert and high quality in-house maintenance of buses
  • Daily checks by drivers and bus monitors
  • Regular inspection of buses by Fleet Inspectors
  • Finely tuned incident management procedures to ensure the quickest response times
